Job Description

Data Center Engineering Operations keeps the physical infrastructure behind Amazon Web Services running: power systems, cooling plant, fire suppression, building management systems and generators that a data centre depends on around the clock. A Data Center Facility Engineer in this team is responsible for the day-to-day operation, monitoring and maintenance of that critical infrastructure at AWS’s Abu Dhabi facilities, keeping the site within tight operating parameters at all times.

The work is hands-on and shift-based: monitoring building management and electrical monitoring systems, responding to alarms, running planned preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment, and troubleshooting faults quickly when something does go wrong, since downtime in a live data centre has an immediate, visible impact on customers. There’s a safety-first culture throughout — working around high-voltage electrical systems and critical cooling plant means following strict procedures every time, with no exceptions.

It suits someone with a background in critical facilities, electrical or mechanical engineering, or data centre operations, who is comfortable being on call and responding fast when an issue arises. AWS data centres run at a scale and reliability bar that few facilities elsewhere match, so the role rewards people who are methodical under pressure and genuinely enjoy keeping complex physical systems running rather than just watching a dashboard.

The appeal is exposure to some of the most advanced critical infrastructure in the UAE, working inside a team that treats uptime as close to non-negotiable, which builds a depth of hands-on facilities expertise that’s hard to get anywhere outside hyperscale data centre operations.

Impact of the Job

Every workload running on AWS out of Abu Dhabi depends, ultimately, on the physical reliability of the data centre this role helps keep running. A Data Center Facility Engineer is one of the people standing between a cooling or power fault and an actual service disruption for AWS customers, which at hyperscale can mean many businesses affected simultaneously if something goes wrong. The preventive maintenance and monitoring performed daily is what keeps small issues from becoming large ones, and the speed and composure of incident response when something does break directly shapes whether customers notice at all. Because AWS markets uptime and reliability as core to its value proposition, the quality of facilities engineering on the ground is effectively part of what the business sells, even though customers never see it directly. This role also feeds operational data back into how AWS designs and specifies future data centres in the region, so lessons learned on shift genuinely shape how the next generation of facilities gets built.

Job Seeker Benefit

Working data centre engineering operations inside AWS gives someone hands-on exposure to critical infrastructure at a scale and reliability standard that very few employers in the UAE can offer, since hyperscale cloud providers run some of the most tightly engineered facilities in the world. The skills built here — rigorous preventive maintenance discipline, incident response under real pressure, deep familiarity with electrical distribution, UPS systems and precision cooling — are in consistent demand across data centre operators, colocation providers and large enterprise facilities teams, making this a genuinely portable skill set rather than one tied to a single employer. The shift-based, on-call nature of the work also builds a particular kind of resilience and composure under pressure that stands out on a CV, since employers know this isn't a role where mistakes are easily undone. For someone earlier in a facilities or electrical engineering career, this is a strong foundation; for someone more experienced, it's a chance to work at a scale that sharpens expertise fast, since the volume and criticality of equipment managed here is simply higher than most traditional facilities roles. It also opens a credible path toward data centre management, critical infrastructure design, or reliability engineering roles later, since AWS's operational standards are widely respected across the industry.

Interview Questions to Prepare For

Walk me through how you'd respond to a cooling system alarm in a live data centre.

Look for a calm, structured response and awareness of escalation points.

Tell me about a time you diagnosed a tricky electrical or mechanical fault under time pressure.

Assess methodical troubleshooting, not guesswork.

How do you approach planned preventive maintenance versus reactive fixes?

Look for genuine discipline around PM schedules, not just firefighting.

Describe your experience working around high-voltage or critical power systems.

Check for real safety-first habits, not just theoretical knowledge.

How do you handle being on call, and what's your approach to a 3am incident?

Gauge honesty about shift work demands and composure under pressure.

Tell me about a time you had to hand over an unresolved issue to the next shift.

Look for clear, complete communication practices.

What interests you about working in hyperscale data centre operations specifically?

Assess genuine motivation versus a generic facilities-job answer.
