Job Description
AWS is expanding its UAE data center footprint, and this Data Center Engineering Operations Engineer role is based at one of its Abu Dhabi facilities. The job is the same mission as everywhere else in AWS’s global fleet: keep the mechanical and electrical systems that power and cool the servers running without interruption, twenty-four hours a day.
Engineers in this role monitor building management systems, run scheduled maintenance on generators, UPS units, chillers, and switchgear, and respond to faults following strict safety and change-control procedures. Shift work is part of the deal, as is staying calm when something breaks at 3am and customers around the world are depending on that facility staying up.
It’s a good match for someone with hands-on electrical or mechanical experience in a critical environment – a data center, power plant, marine, or military background all translate well – who wants to work inside a tightly run, safety-first operation rather than general facilities maintenance. Abu Dhabi’s growing status as a regional cloud and AI infrastructure hub makes this a role with real long-term relevance, not just a maintenance job.
Impact of the Job
This role protects AWS's uptime commitments in Abu Dhabi, which matters more than it might look from the outside: the UAE region is a priority market for AWS, with government, banking, and large enterprise customers who specifically choose AWS's UAE infrastructure because of data residency and reliability requirements. A single mishandled fault in critical power or cooling can take a facility offline, with consequences that ripple out to every customer workload hosted there - from government services to financial transactions. The Data Center Engineering Operations Engineer is the frontline defense against that: catching issues during planned maintenance, responding fast and correctly when something fails, and following procedure strictly enough that a small problem never becomes a big one. As AWS continues to invest in Abu Dhabi as part of its UAE and wider Middle East infrastructure strategy, the operational discipline of roles like this one is a direct input into whether that investment pays off in customer trust and retained business.
Job Seeker Benefit
Abu Dhabi is becoming one of the more interesting places in the world to build a data center operations career right now, given the volume of cloud and AI infrastructure investment landing in the UAE - and getting in at AWS, the market leader, means learning the discipline and standards the rest of the industry benchmarks against. Engineers in this role build deep, transferable expertise in critical power and cooling systems, shift-based operational leadership, and incident management under pressure, all skills in short supply locally as more hyperscalers and colocation providers build out capacity in the region. AWS also invests in structured technical training and safety certification for its data center operations staff, giving people a credentialed path toward more senior electrical, mechanical, or operations-management roles within the company. Beyond AWS itself, this kind of hands-on hyperscale experience is a strong credential across the broader UAE tech and infrastructure sector - at telecom operators, government cloud initiatives, and other data center operators competing for the same talent pool. For someone building a long-term career in critical infrastructure, there's a strong case that doing it inside AWS's Abu Dhabi expansion right now is one of the better places to be. It's a strong long-term bet for anyone serious about building a career in critical infrastructure as the region's cloud footprint keeps expanding.
